The Next Fifty: That Means You, Kitsap

Fifty years ago, legislators from across our state participated in the planning and programming for the 1962 World’s Fair.  They were fueled by civic action and a profound appreciation for the advancement of culture, science, and technology. The legacy of their endeavour still lives on today.

Through a committee of civic leaders and CEOs, Seattle Center will bring together organisations from around the world to hold a wide range of celebrations and events from April to October 2012. During these six months, Seattle Center will be the virtual and physical host – once again connecting our community, region and the world.  Not only will the events and activities celebrate the legacy the original fair left to the region, but they will showcase the opportunities on the horizon for the next 50 years. The celebration will focus on seven areas: (1) Arts, Culture and Design; (2) Sustainability; (3) Global Health; (4) Science and Technology; (5) Learning; (6) Commerce and the Innovation Economy; and (7) Civic Action.

Recently, I became an Ambassador for The Next Fifty, Seattle Center’s 50th Anniversary for the 1962 Seattle World’s Fair. Today, Redmond, Bellevue, Tacoma, and Issaquah have become part of metropolitan Seattle’s innovative landscape and will be represented at this international event. So must we in the Kitsap region. As such, it is important for regional leaders and businesses to gear up.

Some involvement will be ‘pay to play’: financial sponsorships which put your company or community effort front and centre. Other opportunities will include participating on committees or presenting in a focus area. Next 50 highlights include:

  • Seattle World’s Fair Documentary on KCTS 9, which will premiere in Febuary 2012 and be distributed to public television stations nationwide.
  • SIFF Film Series, hosting films and forum discussions on the above seven focus areas.
  • Seattle Science Festival, where Pacific Science Center and collaborators from throughout the region are joining forces to present the first-ever Seattle Science Festival in June, 2012. The month-long series of events includes several days of science and technology-related activities and programs offered at venues around Seattle, a distinguished lecture series featuring luminaries from the science world, and a large-scale Science Expo at Seattle Center, featuring hands-on exhibits, experiments, demonstrations, games, and live performances to engage, educate and entertain audiences of all ages.

A Kitsap event is being planned in conjunction with Next Fifty leaders who will visit to describe the many opportunities for Kitsap area leaders and businesses. Stay tuned, or contact me today if you want in now.
