And So On, and so on, and so on....

Who remembers those Faberge Shampoo commercials of decades past? You know the ones: “I told two friends, and so on, and so on, and so on.”.

Okay, so perhaps you’re too young to recall. So here it is (if my efforts to embed media below didn’t work, click here to view the YouTube video).

I was reminded of this the other day when a friend, who’d been excited about attending a national Society of Professional Journalists conference in Las Vegas this coming October, instead posted her need to cancel after a series of unfortunate events. Many who’d experienced something similar offered words of support and encouragement, but I wondered aloud what would happen if we all pulled together to sponsor her trip. “I’m in.”, I wrote. Immediately, Frank Kenny and Becky Newton indicated they’d be game.

While I chatted privately with Rodika to ensure she was okay with this, Frank posted a link to ChipIn, the perfect tool for our purposes. You enter the reason you’re collecting money, the amount needed and date, enter an email address connected to a PayPal account, and voila! There’s a special URL and page created, along with a widget one can post to web pages and blogs.

From there, we posted a Facebook status update and private messages — and so on and so on, and so on — as friends and colleagues spread the word. Less than 24 hours later, she not only had the money for her conference, but the goal was exceeded. Imagine if we’d done the same thing without the available technology we now have. There’d be phone calls, faxes, visits over coffee or lunch to lobby contributions. Not bad things, really, but instead we were able to accomplish this with some clicks, a few keystrokes, and a whole lotta love.

And so on….and so on….

This is about relationships and social networks, but also the impact technology had on both. Well done all around I’d say.
