Yahoo’s hiring of CEO Marissa Mayer created a lot of buzz in the business community. It wasn’t just due to the fact that a woman was hired to run one of the largest and best known tech companies in the world, though that in and of itself was a rarity. Even more incredible than that fact was the fact that Marissa Mayer is pregnant, and Yahoo knew that when they hired her. Evolved thinking? A sign of better times for women in the workplace? One might think so. But if that’s the case, why has the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) put an increased emphasis on the enforcement of pregnancy anti-discrimination laws?

There have been some flagrant and even outrageous cases recently involving pregnant women and employment. Here are just a couple illustrative examples:

In the midst of seemingly endless partisan arguments in our nation’s capital about how to reduce unemployment, Wal-Mart, America’s largest retailer, announced its own plan to deal with the problem.

William S. Simon, president and chief executive officer of Wal-Mart U.S., announced that beginning on Memorial Day, the company will hire any recent veteran who wants a job. Any veteran honorably discharged within the last 12 months is welcome to apply.

Company officials estimate that 100,000 of the company’s 1.4 million U.S. employees are veterans and project that the five-year program will double that number. read more »

 

Because of uncertainty over the 2013 federal budget, the Navy has implemented a hiring freeze and the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard canceled a job fair that had been scheduled for Jan. 25-26.

In a letter that PSNS commander Capt. Steve Williamson sent to employees last week, he explained that the Navy is operating under a continuing resolution passed by Congress that maintains fiscal year 2012 funding levels. Williamson wrote that unless Congress passes an appropriations bill by the end of March, the Navy will face a budget shortfall this year if the continuing resolution keeps 2012 funding levels in effect.

The Navy will have to “look for ways to slow down spending until (Department of Defense) knows what’s going to happen with the budget over the next few months,” his letter states. read more »

The election is now over and history has been made by Washington and Colorado, the first states to legalize the recreational use of marijuana. Although our state, along with 16 others and the District of Columbia, had already approved the legalization of medical marijuana, this new law is unprecedented in its scope. It appears to have employees and employers scratching their heads and asking, “What next?” as state and federal laws collide.

Let me state up front: I am not a lawyer, and this is untested legal ground. But before you throw up your hands in frustration or confusion, we can look at laws and legal precedents to provide us with some guidance.

During the past year’s seemingly endless political campaigning, candidates at all levels talked nonstop and with great urgency about creating jobs. But a related issue that got far less attention is the skills gap — a shortage of skilled workers and professionals needed to fill jobs in growth industries and to replace all those Baby Boomers heading into retirement.

It’s of particular concern on the Kitsap Peninsula and across the broader region, from Boeing to the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard to small companies poised for expansion in areas such as composites manufacturing.

“Washington state is one of the more technically advanced states in the country in terms of industry,” notes Jeff Brown, an engineering professor at Olympic College. “But we rank in the 40s in terms of turning out engineering graduates.” read more »

Crisis certainly reared its ugly head in 2012.

Savage hurricanes and storms battered the Eastern seaboard. Deadly shootings broke out in a school, movie theater, and shopping mall. Key executives resigned in disgrace and damaged reputations. The aftermath of a child abuse scandal rocked a major university. And in thousands of small businesses around the country, fires destroyed buildings; water damage ruined equipment; data was breached; property was stolen; power outages suspended operations, and employees lost their jobs. The latter cases go mostly unnoticed to the public; however, they impact untold numbers of lives.

When I first started coaching high school basketball, my coaching mentor told me that I could expect at least three crises a year at a minimum. How I responded to those crises would determine the success of the season. read more »

The holiday season came just in time for Kayla Rackard, who was looking to get back in the work force after having her son this September. With shoppers flooding the stores, Walmart was eager to take her on.

Rackard, 20, started at a store in Casselberry in mid-November, and her employment lasts until the end of January. At $8.10 an hour, the seasonal job is a step up in pay and working conditions from her old jobs in fast food.

“I like working at a fast pace. I like interacting with the people,” said Rackard during a break from cashing out holiday purchases.

The Orlando woman is one of more than half-million Americans who have found retail jobs for the 2012 holiday season — one that could be the best for retail hiring in more than a decade. read more »
